Yesterday I experienced something strange.
About 10s after a little more aggresive take-off my ABS light came on.
The light was yellow.

Pulled to the side and did the old Microsoft trick (Re-boot the system, in this case restart the car)
All seemed normal again after I restarted the car.
Then later at the day driving back from work. The light came on again.

Restarted the car and it was gone.

What was that all about?
The first time it happened the brake pedal felt strange when the light came on.
I applied the brakes very lightly and could feel the ABS engaging. Then the light came on.

I stand clueless. Faulty ABS sender?

My car did this for a while, no strange feeling under the peddle though

I have since changed by Brake fluid and the light hasnt came on since.

Check your Brake Fluid level, is its ok there are various other things in the Service Manual that may help

Check the ABS sensor on the fronts is secure and OK.
I'll check fluid level and sender

Where is it located by the way? front calipers?
I'll also check the ABS harness if it's OK.

The light has stayed off for now.
I'll get my ass out of the oven and get the brake fluid changed some day.

Fluid levels OK

Took the car out for a spin and there is definetly ABS trouble.
When applying brakes the ABS goes in when it feels like it.

There's also a sound comming from the rear. Sounds like an electrical engine of some kind.

I'll disconnect the ABS for now as I want to get my EBC set up.

Where are those senders located?

Fuel pump??? though I'm not sure what that would have to do with it. Some kind of brake fluid pump then?

Not sure about the back, but the front sensors are very close to the callipers. May be a problem at the back by the sounds of it...

It could be the fuel pump.

I disconnected the ABS by removing the three cables going to the box in the engine bay.

When ABS was engaged, it seemed to jump in occasionally when braking. I only had to touch the brake pedal sometimes.
It was kinda scary cause it distributed braking force to different wheels. shifting the brake-balance to the side. So the car would jerk left sometimes during a brake.

I was to tired to have a look at the senders. So I dumped the car in the garage. Will have a looksie tomorrow.
But If a sender was faulty, wouldn't the ABS light light up?

Yes, but it could be a dodgy connection...
I'll take a look at the senders tomorrow.
If that doesn't fix it I'll try with new brake-oil.

If that doesn't work.I'll cry out in this thread or have someone else look at it. :D

most ABS systems use electromagnetic proximity sensors, that counts the pulses given as a toothed wheel passes by the sensor. the problem with these types of sensors is that they have a very small proximity range, from 0.4mm-0.8mm for most of them. but i'm not 100% sure what the range is on the nissan ABS units, but dirt blocking the sensor or the sensor becoming loose can often cause annoying problems.

hope this helps

tom.

Thanks.

I'll remove all the sensors and give them a clean tomorrow.
I hope this will do the trick.

I'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow.

Hmm. Anyone knows what the ABS sender look like?
Had a look in the rear and found something which I thought could be a sender on the diff. But it could also be for the speed, so I ended up painting my rear calipers instead :D

Front one looks like this:

Not sure about the back...

EDIT: this will help. Not actually around the callipers at the rear...

there might not be rear sensors as the system can pick up the rear wheels speed through speedo pick ups on the gearbox/ diff ( but i haven't looked so i'm not entirely sure)

Thanks
Spotted one of those on the diff

I'll look at it tomorrow or sunday. I've read that they are easily shattered when trying to remove them :(
Have to be gentle :)

If all else fails, Nissan can do ABS ECU diagnostics through Consult II (you may want to take the manual along though...)
