HELP URGENT: Engine swap choice?

hi all, my buddy S15 SR20DET engine is leaking compression and burning oil, and 2 different mechanics have told him a rebuild is needed....however, the cost is not cheap...therefore, we're thinking of swapping a used S14 or S15 engine, and use the current engine as spare parts. His delimma is....S15 engine goes for around USD$1500 - 2400 here, where S14 is only around USD $1000 here....he prefer the S15 engine since is newer, but the cost is more and availability is lower (less to choose from)....so the question is, other than the turbo, is S14 and S15 engine exactly the same? his current turbo is ok, should he go for a S14 or S15 engine?

I would go for the S14 engine.
Swap turbo, injectors, rocker cover with the S15 coilpacks.

Don't know if there's anything else.

you mean the s14 engine would go in s15, by just keeping the s15 coilpack for the s14 engine?

Supposedly.
But the S15 coilpacks doesn't fit in the S14 rocker cover. You could either mod the S14 cover to make them fit or just swap to a S15 rocker cover.

i haven't tried this myself. But from what I've read that's all there is to it

Hmm how about an s14a engine into a Spec S?
Should fit right in if used with the S14 ECU.
I don't know if the main harness needs to be swapped.

Elizium!! Where are you :D

Lol. Been covered quite a few times on SXOC. No, not quite that simple, but not difficult. Plus there's all the other stuff, like the brakes, suspension, wheels, diff, exhaust, etc...

Yes. But if you just wanted to swap motor. shouldn't it fit right in?

Albert has done this conversion too.

..

i've got most of it apart from the engine, does the s14 engine fit on the s15-s gearbox?

The S14 box is the same as the 5-speed Spec-S box. So it should fit right on.

.

i just read one of the details from the clutch GB in sxoc and
it saids that the flywheel is different due to the sprung with the fly wheel and
not on the clutch like the s14 but swapping the clutch and flywheel
together should be ok with that?
