What do you want to know about datascan specifically?

I've got datascan running on my car PC. There are a few pics of it running in my build thread. You can monitor everything the ECU has sensors for and make all sorts of adjustments. Well worth getting IMO.

Datascan doesn't need to be registered. You can pull all the fault codes/descriptions on it and reset the ECU etc anong with loads of other stuff. You can even time your 0-60 and 0-100 times on it!

All you need is the lead and software. I'm not sure where would be the best place to get them from but plenty of places sell the kit.

Software does not need to be registered, just ask the UK distributor about UK price & availability. I could be wrong with the newer silvia's but they are OBD

Just be careful about buying one of those generic OBD fault code readers... I got a neighbour to read fault code on my missus' BMW 5 series which worked perfectly fine but it didn't work at all on my Silvia.

I reckon getting an Apexi PFC aftermarket ECU has made it impossible to read by one of these generic OBD plug and play units... unless someone can correct me wrong??

The PFC probably has its own diagnostic protocol which will be read using the mapping software. I'd imagine it's different from the OEM protocols used. The best bet with a PFC is to check the various stats using a controller.

Don't buy a generic OBDII reader, they won't work. Nissan does use OBDII, but it is their own format called consult. The Blazt cable works (I know cause I have one) and you can use the datascan software without registering it, but it is limited. The software is about US$40 and the datalog viewer is about US$25.

The PFC is a different thing again. You need an interface box to plug it into the pc. (http://www.fc-datalogit.co.nz) not cheap at around US$375. There were some guys on the RX7 forums making different software, but you still needed the interface box. I have offered my assistance with the development, but the guys have seemed to have given up on the project.

Thanks for the info guys... had a feeling the PFC has made a hash out of these diagnostic port readers and software lol :wack:

My suspicions were first raised when I bought a Yashio Okachan Water Temp plug and play unit - simply plugs into Consult port and away you go... well it worked for Mint when he fitted this to his car but when I plugged in mine it displayed gobbledygook so gave up and sold the unit to Greco!

I'll have a look into getting this interface as I'm sure I'll be needing to read diagnostic info at some point - most likely when the car is poorly etc.

Take it Nistune wouldn't cause the same problem as Apexi PFC or another plug in replacement aftermarket ECU because it kinda sits on top of the original Nissan ECU??

Nistune still works with datascan and datalog, hence why I am going for this over a PFC :)

I wouldn't mind a PFC. I think they are really good but it would be a waste of a car PC for me if I had one.

I have a PFC and due to the lack of nice display software for my carPC (A mate of mine has the datalogit for his S14) I am going with the Nistune for all the above mentioned reasons. Plus for the price of the PFC, datalogit and the tune I can get the Nistune, a tune and an FMIC and probably still have money left over.
