Fellas,

A friend of a friend with an S14 is selling his GT2871R tubby - details as follows:

GT2871r
0.64 a/r
56 Trim
3" inlet
3,000 miles
Part Number 743347-2

Bearing in mind I don't wanna pay 'extra' for the HKS GT-RS kit and the fact that I've been thinking about the 2871 as a suitable alternative, will this be a good choice?

I'm only planning on getting the car up to around 350 bhp - maybe slightly more and also wanted one for drifting and decent fast road pick up/spool etc... will this be perfect for my needs?

Also, what price (it's done around 3k miles) would you expect to pay?

Cheers,

J

i run the 0.64 52 trim mate and its whats reccommended as an easy fit for the spec you're after. the 56 trim wont be a direct fit as such, the turbine inlet and outlet are a hose type rather than using the standard nissan 3 bolt and 2 bolt flanges so you'd need to alter the intake and hot pipe routing.:)

the .64 52trim is garretts own interpretation of the hks gtrs.

oh yeah, 56 trim wont spool as quickly but can wring a few extra horses out, not a drastic difference just a couple of hundred rpm :)

i used to find it quite laggy for skidding but not much of a issue

would a 2860r be a better replacment?>

Dean - thanks for the confirmation dude... you've saved me on buying a turbo I wouldn't have wanted cos of the faffing with the inlet/outlet pipes... I'd much rather get a direct bolt on replacement

Si - does the 2860r have an equivalent name in the 'GT**' nomenclature??

Come to think of it, can someone please clarify what we have as stock S15's and what the aftermarket versions/construction/power ratings are? Here's what I think - please fill in the blanks lol :)

Stock S15 tubby = GT28R = GT???? = Semi ball-bearing (only on one side) = ~330 bhp max

Stock S14 (later versions of stock S15) = GT28? = GT???? = Roller bearing = ~ 330 bhp max

GTSS = GT???? = ???? = ??? bhp max
GTRS = GT2871R = Full ball-bearing = ~400 bhp max

Apologies but wanted to clear this once and for all cos it's always been confusing trying to work this out?! :wack:

28r s15 BB turbo - 330 max at a push with better spool than the journal
2871r .64 52 trim - squares squeezed 400 out of this turbo:thumbs:

I know the S14A Silvia / S15 BB turbo is a GT2860R.

I think the HKS GT-SS is a GT2860RS?

As far as I know, HKS sell rebranded Garrett turbos, so any HKS turbo probably has an original Garrett variant.

For 350bhp+, I'd go for the GT2871R, a GT2860R would run out of puff, and as far as I know, a GT2860RS would be pretty much on the limit too.

I was having a look around for turbos the other day, and found this one on the norris designs website : http://www.norrisdesigns.com/proddetail.asp?prod=S14-022508 , they say it can handle 370bhp with less lag than standard. Interesting!

There seems to be so many variants with the T28 series it confuses me at times lol?!

So in order of power increase I guess we can order the T28's as follows:

T28 (S14) ~ 320 bhp max

GT2860R / T28R (S15 BB) ~ 330 bhp max

GT2860RS / GTSS ~ 330 bhp max

GT2871R / GTRS ~ 400 bhp max

Out of interest why would anyone pay to have the GTSS/GT2860RS?? Does it have slightly quicker spool up?

I'll deffo be going for the 2871R - just need to find a low mileage one or save pennies to buy a brand new item middle of next year :)

Is it always best to buy one of those HKS actuators when I fit the aftermarket tubby cos the 2871R won't be supplied with one?

i'm running my 2871r with the original actuator off my 28r but i am going to go for an adjustable before long. the car produces 357hp and 345Ib/ft at a little over 5k revs and peaks at 1.38bar hiolding over 1.2 bar to redline

that seems really laggy to me?
my s14a running 1.4bar made 372bhp at afaicr 4.2k?

so is the s15 sr20det more laggy than the s14 one?

i only ask because my s15 is runnning 295bhp at 1bar on what i thought was a t28r but it seems to be on full boost by 4k which makes me think theres a diffrent turbo on there

Is that with uprated internals, head gasket, injectors etc?

mhg, arp head studs and nuts, nismo 740cc injectors, z32 afm, standard internals which are holding up very well - they are in perfect health:nod:

I'm pretty sure you can get to 350 on stock internals with a 2871R. I was at FC Tuning when he was mapping an S14a and got 350lb/ft / 350bhp.

No idea if the spoolup will be as good without the cams though.

Definately looks like the 2871 is the way forward though! :D

stock internals and 1.3-4 bar will produce 350 on a stock sr20det
would recomend a headgasket just in case

lupix personally i would never buy a second hand turbo

the spec of that turbo is what ill be buying but im top mounting mine and having a ceramic coated exhaust hoursing and polished inlet
i would like to go v-band but its not really a option for a small turbo like the 28's

Yeah it's difficult trying to see whether there's any internal damage to a turbo (apart from the fins and general integrity of the shaft) so I guess that's the risk one puts up with if the price is favourable... but TBH it's looking like a low mileage used 2871r is not that easy to come across so I'll more than likely be buying this brand new from TurboTechnics or someone similar :)

Ordering Nismo 555's in the new year woop (and before anyone says no, I've decided against the 740's due to how far I want to take the car)... so remap and more b0000st here we come!! :D

the 56trim will support 45lb.min so with the turbine housing you have you cant expect to see much more than 400.
