What is my engine doing?

Ok so as some of you might know I had my turbo off over the weekend and put it all back together.

I took my car out earlier tonight and it all seemed fine

Just started it up again and I have no idea whats happening.

The engine is shaking, causing the exhaust to shake with it.

Im getting very definate pluses of exhaust and not a steady flow like normal out of the exhaust pipe.

When I went to put it back in the garage the whole car was shaking

But strangly as I got it into the garage it all calmed down and seemed to go back to normal almost.

I immediatly thought exhuast gasket or something but I cannot see or hear anything leaking.

I know someone on here is going to be able to tell me what my car is doing/what Ive now got to replace :annoyed:

Does it sound like its misfiring or not firing on all cylinders ?

Does not sound like its misfiring but its hard to tell as its shaking alot and thats about all I can hear.

Although I did think it might be from the pulses of exhaust rather than a steady flow.

Would this cause the engine to jolt around?

Strange how it seemed to settle down after a bit though.

misfiring for def'.

pull a coilpack off and see if that simulates what you were experiencing.

when coilpacks start to fail, they miss for a while, then sort themselves, .... that is untill they die completely!

Ok Ill give it a try when I get home from work tomorrow.

If it is that is it an expensive fix?

defo sounds like the coilpacks.

with the engine running all lumpy and the coilpack cover off, pull the plug off of a coilpack. if it gets even worse and almost stalls, that one is fine.

keep trying them until you find one that has no affect on the idle and it stays lumpy and "pulsey". the one that stays the same and doesnt get worse is the culprit.

get it out and buy a new one! they are about 50 odd quid from nissan iirc

Maybe a loose intercooler hose or pipe causing fluctuating idle???

Sounds like a boost leak or a coil pack. Will it rev at all at a standstill?

Yeah it does rev.

When I get home Ill have a good look over the whole engine bay for anything that has come lose or unclipped.

Then Ill start it up and try disconnecting some coilpacks.

Stupid question, but I can just replace any broken coils, I dont have to do the whole lot?

Are the S15 coilpacks the same as the S14?

Its possible its a dodgy coilpack connector. It has been known. More likely a coilpack though. You can replace them individually. They cost about £50 from Nissan GB. And, no, they are different to S14 coilpacks.

Can I just confirm the part I need is 22448-91F00 COIL ASSY-IGNITION?

Is this just a coincidence that this happened to happen after Id taken the turbo off or is there a chance it could be related?

That's the one :nod: You can just get the top section, but you may as well replace the whole thing.

It quite common for the packs to fail, so its probably just coincidence.

Ive got to try and get to Nissan somehow :rotfl:

Dont want to make anything any worse.

Really dont like the way the exhaust shakes around when its running, worried its going to crack the manifold or something???

Its usually intermittent, as you've found out. I would disconnect/reconnect all coilpack connectors first and see if the problem is still there. Could just be that.

When one goes, you are basically running on three cylinders, so not that good to keep driving.

Might even be tempted to get a set of Spitfires myself and replace them all if it is the ignition coils.

I was about to say i could pop round in my S15 and test mine (if they are easy to remove and fit again?) but Matt's knowledge on the SR20 would be far more useful in diagnosing the issue

they do go randomly.

mine went when i was filling up with petrol. pulled up fine, filled up, started it up and it sounded like a scooby!

chances are darren that it will be fine next time you start the car. mine was fine about an hour later, then later that night it went again, and i changed them out.

imo i think spitfires will be overkill if youre running stock boost.

THey do break down with heat, so theres a chance it may well be OK when started from cold :wack:
If so Ill just check whatever else it could be.
