Finally had a chance to have another look into this.

The butterfly is working fine so thats not the problem.

I disconneted the solenoid and I only got 0.4 boost.

When I connected it back up again the boost goes to 0.5.

Does this mean its likley to be the actuator?

Could someone please tell me what the actuator is/does as Im not too sure?

Thanks :)

An actuator regulates the boost.
It starts closed letting all the air go through the turbo, when the pressure rises to a set point the actuator valve opens so that a stable boost can be maintained. A boost controller fools the actuator by bleeding out air so that the actuator thinks that the pressure is lower than what it is.
Basically a self regulating pressure valve :)

If the spring is too loose it can open prematurely and that would cause lower boost.

Cheers guys.

Yeah it does sound like the actuator having read all that.

I guess the easiest thing would be to get a new actuator and try it.

Anyone got any idea how much one of these might be?

Would it be worth going to an electronic boost controller if I need to replace this part?

Thanks.

If it does turn out to be the actuator, your's will not be closing fully so is staying open.

I'm assuming you have checked the basics like boost guage piping hasnt split etc.

OK so I might as well just get a new actuator and leave the electronic boost controller for now which is fine by me for now :)

Ive checked all the piping and cannot see anything wrong with any of it, most of it is aftermarket silicone hose.

Is this the kind of thing I need then link

The one you have posted is an adjustable one. So if you prefer not to get an EBC you could always adjust the boost by altering the length of the throw on the arm.

Not sure but I think that the HKS actuator doesn't allow you to boost below 0.8Bar or something. Probobly more if you open up the breathing.
Could be a problem unless you plan to remap the car.

Someone else on here should know more about the HKS actuator.

I should have a stock actuator somewhere in the basement.

But you should be able to feel the actuator by trying to move the arm manually. pretty hard to tell if it's fubared though if you don't know how it's supposed to feel.

That could be a problem as I do not plan on boosting more than stock right now.

Can anyone confirm this to be true?

Otherwise Ill be going for the HKS one.

Eventually I plan to get the whole EBC setup but if I can avoid one for now Id perfer it.

You can never boost below an actuators standard boost boost pressure i.e. if you get a 0.8 bar actuator then thats your lowest boost if you get 1.2 then thats your lowest boost...

I do believe the HKS one is adjustable upto 1.0 bar by extending/retracting the arm...

If your looking for a replacement then i'd go for a HKS if you ca find one cheap enough or a forge one will do!

H-dev are doing them for £89 altough i have seen them go on fleabay for £45 give or take!

Been doing some hunting on the SXOC about the HKS actuator.

According to what I have read, Bren says they are good for between 13psi and 20psi, so about 0.89Bar minimum.

My whole powertrain is standard and I was not planning on increasing the boost or anything just yet.

Firstly will upping my boost to 0.9 be bad for my car in any way?

Secondly is it likley that I will be able to find an aftermarket actuator that will be simular to stock boost or will they mainly be uprated as they are aftermarket items?

0.9 bar is nothing u'l be fine!! U'l have abit more run aswell!
According to Jez at h-dev a JDM S15 with stock map is very likely to be detting at anything over 0.8Bar in the midrange with 98Ron fuel.

I'm sure Nicely will come along soon and say the same

That's the reason why I haven't been boosting more than .8Bar.

Are you running 98ron fuel... On Stock ECU???

I guess Jez would know!

I had no det with mine running 0.9 - 1bar on a bleed valve
