S15 Rear clunk, thud, noise.

Hi all,

First off I am a noob and have a super thick flame suit on so please dont even bother.
I recently bought a Black JDM S15 Spec R and I love it. BUT I have a problem that eats at me.

At low speeds when I accelerate, change gears. I hear a thud/clunk. Its not earth shattering but its there.
Just a single thud/clunk. It sounds like it comes primarily from the rear left wheel. I have on occasion heard it on the right but no where near as much as left.

My friend [qualified mechanic] inspected it and said it was the diff, excessive backlash. The tailshaft and all that where fine. I went to the diff specialist and he said it the diff was stuffed there would be whining and the backlash seems normal. He also said ask a gearbox guy. I went to the gearbox guy and he said the box was fine and stuff like this was hard to diagnose because its not that bad ... yet. He mentioned that S15 driveshafts have a spline and maybe that is worn down and has some play.

My other friend who is also a qualified mechanic and has an S15 said its probably the GB and the S15 boxes are renown for being clunky and noisey.

Has anyone had similar experience? Sorry for the essay, but I want to give a clear desciption so I can get some definite answers, Im not some noob kid.

I have this sound too frequently especially down shifting in high rev. It's definitely coming from the rear.

But so far nothing damaged. And still happily revving, boosting and drifting.

Still on a 6speed too.

too many skids............
I wanna do skids but I'm worried I might make things worse.

What type of clutch is in it ?
Nothing crazy. Feels like an OEM clutch to me. But then again I didnt install it.

Yea? I've had it inspected, by multiple qualified mechanics. And they say its nothing really major [thank fu(k] but it is eating me alive because I am really anal about noises. I think it may be the driveshafts.

I'm 90% sure it'll be your shafts. But also could be your diff bushes? When I changed to polly bushes on my rear subframe the noise became more distinctive. It wasn't until I changed to r33 2 way diff and shafts that the noise subsided!

I still get the odd knock on acceleration but I do have a 2 way and my shafts get alot of abuse! :)

Been happening on mine for a while now and it drives me nuts! :annoyed:

There is alot of other people who have the same problem on loads of different s bodies if you search the net...nissansilvia.com etc..

Check this thread out for more info -

I am gonna strip mine down again when i change the rear brakes and see if I can find anything...im 90% sure it is gonna be diff backlash..I havent been bothered to check mine yet but if you go under the car and turn the prob and see if there is a few mm off play each way...thatl be the clunk when you change gear or accl etc its just the prop catching up.

I have changed every bush at the back, arms, diff, subframe so I know its not worn bushes...i just live with it atm, if somethign breaks then it breaks at least I will know what the problem is then..

Sounds 100% like your drive shaft CV joints are shagged! I'd swap the shafts as its easier than getting new CV joints. S14 ones fit :) ...then go drifting!

Well I know my driver’s side cv boot is running a tad low on grease...as it split before but really couldn’t be bothered changing it so tapped it up nice and good lol!

Thing is one of the noises comes from passenger side so it’s not that :p

If i could get the car in the air and get someone to drive it slowley I would 99% be able to find problem I reckon.
