Hi All,

Just sold my evo 8 mr and wanted to go for a silvia s15 spec R and was wondering what are the service cost like and intervals, can't be as bad as a evo right? and where can i service it? Dealers or any specialist recommended around south east london?
roughly how much mpg does it average and the standard boost bar.
Also what is it like to drive and any info i can get to verify if the car is a genuine spec r and what to look out for!

Thanks alot

Hi mate,

You're not going to regret getting the Spec R as there's loads going for it. You should see some massive differences coming from an Evo 8

I'm not sure about specialists in the South East as I'm miles away from that area but whatever you do, avoid Nissan dealerships at all cost lol :wack: They really don't have a clue and usually seem unrepentent about lack of knowledge cos it's an import model *arses* Also, you're in the vacinity of an importer called SVA Imports - just do a search on this forum and see what the results bring up... ;)

Service costs are going to be way lower than the Evo. As an example, I just recently puchased from Brakes International a whole set of OEM rear brake discs and pads and the grand total came to under £70 - not bad at all!! Yeah running costs should be much more sensible and lots of parts are shared with the S14 so you can find a lot of used stuff for sale on here and SXOC forum.

MPG for me averages between low to high 20's depending on where it's urban or motorways etc.

Driving wise I would say it's fantastic (well I would) - as a base car before any performance tuning, it's enough for RWD and a good car to start with if it's your first RWD. Evo's and all their 4WD plus gadgetry make you feel safe around fast corners etc but with the S15, you gotta learn how it behaves but if you know when to put the foot down, it's grippy and very enjoyable!! And of course, it's great for driiifting

The main thing about sourcing genuine Spec R's is that there's a supporting BIMTA mileage certification (this is done when the car is first imported) and if you can get the VIN, then someone will be able to check on here for you whether it's a Spec R as well AFAIK??

Good luck and hope you get your 15 soon enough :)

These cars are a pice of piss to work on...seriously. About the only issue i had was the oil filter as they can be a real pain in the ass to get off unless you have skinny arms. I got a relocation kit which now makes a oil change take 10 mins in total.

Service and performance parts are cheap as chips as you can pretty much use all S14/a consumables and uprated parts including all suspension and brakes.

If you do use a specialist then id suggest you use someone with lots of experiance on S14's as they are practically identical in most mechanical aspects.

The most important thing to sort out is the suspension and geomatery imo as this makes the car behave alot more predicatable. Powerwise standard boost is about 0.7 Bar putting out 250BHP and then 300-330BHP is easily acheivable with the normal stage 1 mods to run 1.2 Bar and a remap (which i strongly reccomend). This should also still return 25-35 MPG.

As far as driving goes its certianly a car to keep you on your toes esp when running higher boost. The standard helical LSD does an excellent job of keeping the tail from misbehaving but becomes near to useless in the wet so you need to be extremely respectful. However when the backend does break ever it does so gradually compared to other cars giving you plenty of time to correct or adjust the drift angle if you wish ;)

I dont think you will be flying down country roads as fast as you would in an Evo but imo it will make you far less likely to crash as i find Evo's and Subarus give many drivers a false sense of security and push their driving beyond their own limits, this usualy results in very nasty accidents at high speeds.

RWD is such a rewarding experience for me that im not sure id ever want to go back to anything else :)
