I was just wondering where a good place to start modding my car would be.

This is my first "performance" car, and my first turbo car

I do know my stuff about cars but I was just wondering where to start?

a mate of mine said I should get a boost controller and a turbo timer.

What are some relativity cheap ways to get some more power out of my car?

Because I know that the adm s15's has been detuned compared to the jdm s15's.

:)

Exhaust , filter and a boost controller is a good start. Chuck in a set of colder plugs with that.

i agree with yakozan, i always start with the most noticable mods first..

exhaust, intake, spark plugs

after that, suspension and handling would be next on my list...

i thought you said you had the spec s model? in that case, your car is naturally aspirated... meaning no turbo..

do I have to get brakes and suspension first? :p
You don't have to upgrade those ever if don't don't want to. It all depends on how you plan to use your car. For a street car which is driven at a regular pace. stock will do fine. Maybe some upgraded pads if you drive it a bit harder.

If you wanted to mod it for track, I would concentrate on cooling, traction and handling mods. Last thing on the list would be engine.

warning about a decat. They are illegal and if you get done, the fine is quite large.

As for recommendations about what to do first, I would do things in this order.

1) panel Air filter (K&N or the like)
2) Free boost upgrade or boost controller (FBU is a $2 piece of pipe to increase your boost from 8psi to 10psi. Nice and cheap and this is what I have atm.)
3) cat back exhaust.

These three will give you an extra 30kw at the wheels. The cost of all 3 mods for me was about $260. How far you go depends on $$$$.

after that I did the suspension. Coilovers, swaybars, adjustable camber caster arms and strut braces of which the biggest difference was in the swaybars.

Next will be more engine mods.

wooh, really? 30kw??

is 10 psi the safest boost to run on the stock turbo?

I thought a cat back wouldnt give you much gains...

I wouldnt get getting a decat because I want to try and keep it legal :p

I just basically for the moment want to make up the power gap between the jdm s15 and my adm one, which is about 35-40kw

The stock turbo is good for about 17psi. Then it runs out of puff. I am running 10psi with those 3 mods on 95 octane with no problems.

Mine which is an ADM was dynoed at 115kw at the wheels when stock and then after the mods (on a different dyno) at 142kw at the wheels.

Suspension and braking mods should always be high on the list of things to do, mean you can get the best out of the power you already have.

Most people tend to look at the engine first though, but the stage 1 mods of filter and exhaust are always easy enough to do. Might be worth thinking about a sports cat in the exhaust, keeps it legal but still frees up a chunk more power. In terms of boost you can go cheaper with a relief valve or more controlled with an electronic jobbie, the GReddy Profec B Spec II is popular and does a pretty good job for the money. Others rave about the Blitz controllers, which are said to have amongst the best boost control of any ebc on the market :)

I woudnt' run more then 12psi of boost with the stock intercooler, more boost=more heat.

Turbo back exhaust with a highflow cat,pod filter or K&N panel in the stock air box and bump the boost up to 12psi will give you at least 25 to 30rwkw. :)
