10 Year ESVA Rule

This is a follow-up from a discussion on the SXOC found HERE.

The debate focused on the "at first sight" cheap pricing of an auto S15 Spec-R.

I felt that the car was reasnobly priced for the following reasons:
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Viscous diff
  • Been in the country numerous years, (pre-ESVA as no model report for auto S15's)
  • Non-Specialist Importer/Dealer
  • More than likely a part-exchange vehicle
  • Suspect mileage (without proof etc)
In usual contrast many S13/S14 SXOC members believed that come 2009 the 10 year exemption rule for UK ESVA would allow all 1999 S15's to be registered without ESVA type approval. And therefore argued that s15's "are dropping money".

A bit of an overstatement when you consider that ESVA costs amount to usually no more than £1000 for a standard S15.

However, I believed that the DFT were scrapping the 10 year rule in April 2009? See HERE of a post on GTRoc. Making this debate irrelevant?

More than likely it will be scrapped. Importers have a 4 month window (Jan - May) to get 99 reg S15's through a normal SVA test.

There will be quite a few imported no doubt but not in the quantity that many other popular Jap cars flooded the market in as there isnt the same kind of demand for S15's as there was in Supras, RX7's, GTR's etc. People aso remember that a decent S15 arent cheap in the auctions, the more modified ones are even more!

As many of us know, finding lots of grade 4 auction quality S15s to import in four months is going to prove rather difficult...

But as we know many importers perfer the cheaper R graded cars as they can make a bigger markup.

It has been in the pipeline anyway. However, I will be moving back to Oz next year and it won't be going with me.
