Can I introduce you to the 'Useful Threads' announcement at the top of every forum section? ;) Under 'Interior, Exterior and Trim'...

About the blocking to prevent air getting to the gauge.

I taped the backside of the vent with electrical tape. No problems so far and I've been running it like that for over a year now :)

Risk of the dustcloth getting hot and catching fire? Prob slim, is there no way to disconnect/block the air further down, closer to sourse?

I never have hot air going through the face vents, only cold or A/C'd. If the heating was that hot, I think there would be other, more worrying things, to think about... :p

I don't use the car when it gets that cold.
To little grip and to much ice, snow and salt on the roads.

It would have to get pretty hot for it to catch fire. I don't think it's an issue. you could probobly block it further down. But it's easier higher up as you can reach in from the vents. No need to dismantle the whole car :)
