Got my S15 today

After what seemed to be the longest week ever. I finally got my S15 today, Wow is all i can say.

This thing is so quick. Currently on 1 bar boost and it feels plenty. Around 300-310hp from what I've been told. Boost comes in quick, no lag and strong. Wide power band from around 4k to 6.5k. Lovely tone from the exhaust. Backend predictably has already come out a few times, but I was prepared for it. Even if it did make my hairs stand on end...

Car does have a few problems though. Strange ticking sound from boost solenoid. Even when i turn the boost controller off its still ticking from the solenoid. I have a Greddy Profec. The handling feels weird and unstable, trackings out for certain and the car is very high at the rear end.

Also, I noticed the power steering fluid was boiling when I checked the oil? Obviously this is not normal.....

Brakes are poor imo. Discs have a lip on them, and i might change the fluid as well to 5.1. Do the S14 brake discs fit this car?

The japanese dvd monitor gives me a headache, no idea how to control it but apparantely it can pick up japanese tv, does this mean it can pick up uk tv? Oh and it swalloed one of my dvds already

All small problems........ but I love the car. It really is a very quick motor. I didn't think the difference would be this big coming from a 200hp front wheel drive motor but it is.

the clicking sound from the boost solenoid is probably more likely the AFM, i've got a clicking sound from mine if i blip the throttle whilst standing near.

the powersteering fluid also isn't boiling, it's circulating... just looks very unsettled.

As nicely has asked though, fueling? has that been sorted? running 1bar withouth, isn't wise at all!!!!

Hi guys,

Your right, the steering fluid isn't boiling at all lol  , just being pumped round.

Charlie recommended me to check into a tuner about the fuelling side of things. I've done a little research and apparantely the Orient Works ECU can handle upto 1.2 bar but i will get this checked out by Abbey. Until then i think i should turn the boost down til i get used to the car.

I think the S15 gives me better gas mileage then my civic....... How is that possible? Not that im complaining just seems weird that a mild-moderately tuned turbo car gives more MPG then my standard NA civic.

Nicely, its lowered on HKS coilovers. I think Im going to take it to a suspension specialist to get it to handle how i want it to.

i remember charlie talkin' about the one you've purchased when i got mine.... yours was away for SVA when i got mine..... he said about the extra boost making soooo much difference over the standard form...

(which is kinda glad i got mine like i did, cause if i didn't... it'd be big spending to make it quicker (not that it'd need it!))

The issue isn't with the amount of boost the ECU can handle, its the type of fuel it was mapped for. If it hasn't been mapped in this country, it will be setup for 100RON Jap fuel. Running 1 bar boost on 97/98RON fuel will most likely see you detting. It won't be as bad as th standard ECU, which has a terrible lean patch mid rev range, but its still quite possible.

Can Abbey map that ECU? A word of advice about Abbey. They may be very good, but they are not particularly cheap (as I'm sure you know). If I was in your position, I'd either get a standard ECU and get a Horsham Developments custom mapped chip (?295 for the chip and mapping) or get an A'PEXi PFC and have it mapped by Horsham. Jez at Horsham knows S13, S14 and S15 ECUs inside out and is considerably cheaper than Abbey.

Down to you though. That's my advice based on 4 years experience of S14s and 2 years of S15s. :)

Regarding the handling. I looked back and saw you've got HKS coilovers. Depending on how low its set, the alignment could be miles out if all the other recommended alignment bits aren't fitted. Camber in particular. The S14 and S15 both suffer huge negative camber when lowered. You can sort the front, but not the rear without camber and toe arms. You definitely want to get it checked.

All part and parcel of buying a higher modified S15, I'm afraid. No real guarantee of what you're getting. :(

Fitting a decent set of pads will help your brakes. Ferodo DS2500s or, a lot cheaper and very capable, Porterfield R4S pads.

Fuel economy. A good mapping will generally see a good economy figure. Mine is custom mapped for 1.2 bar and returns around 25mpg at 290bhp at the wheels :)

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

I will definately get that ECU checked out. I am running on Tesco 99RON, and will probably continue to do so as I live right by one. I've read somewhere in independent testing that it averages around 100RON?

When i get the results of how the engine is running i will probably go with your suggestions if I need to change things. I might go there to get it checked out.

Engine seems to take a while starting tho, i think the plugs might need to be changed.

Sure seems like Charlie's putting alot of happy faces on the map, is it worth adding his details along with the guys at Torque GT into the Importers thread.

Yea mate, picked her up yesterday not long after you'd been there, how did you find the long drive north, more than enough miles to get used to the drive?

You been affected by the snow over there yet. 1st full day of ownership today and had to spend it doing 15 mph all the way to work, but at least its got her the same shape as when it left my drive. :p
