I've tried to do a search and failed (does it not like words with 3 charecters) and read through this thread. http://forum.s15oc.com/showthread.php?1997-TAX&p=25107#post25107

My question. With the tax based on year of registration does that mean a fresh import would cost £790 for the first year. With it being registered after April 2010.

If thats the case maybe a fresh import isn't the way to go. Don't really fancy paying the goverment that much.

no. Lol. Mine and Lloydys are £215 a year (i taxed it a few weeks ago) and his was registered recently, and mine was registered 2002.

:)

They wont tax you £790! thats rediculous! I'm pretty sure it'll take the date of production in the case of imports.

My S15 is a 2001 march built version and I imported it into the uk in march 2011 and all I paid was a registration fee of £55 and 12 months tax which is £215. Really easy process! Aslong as its over 10 years old, all you need is to MOT it, and fill in a DVLA form, something like a P55a and take it to a DVLA office. Simples.

I imagine year of 'registration' in this case would refer to year of manufacture? In any case its 215 odd! :)

Just a heads up, if you come across a t**t in your local VRO they will promply explain to you that the year of first registration is when it's first registered in the uk, not year of manufacture. It states that on your log book also as there are 2 fields one for YOM and one for first imported, not sure what the tax rules are now, i've had two 15's - they had different tax - one 425 the newer one is on the old PLG system so work that out. Prob the best thing to do is to check with your VRO then make sure you speak to that person every time - different people will tell you different things!!!!

I had this issue when I imported mine. Wanted to know if it was going to be taxes under the old PLG tax bracket ( approx £200) or that stupid £425 rule that they used for a short while. Was told by Mike at Torque Gt it would definetly be in the PLG bracket when I was looking to import about 2 years back.
I wanted to know, as this would affect whether I wanted one or not. No way if it was £425. Fu€k that.
Are you looking to import one yourself, or through an import specialist?
Specialists are usually clued up on this sort of thing if they regularly import cars. Give them a bell, as you may find you get a straight answer, whereas some of the dvla folk get mixed up when it comes to imported cars. Different rates and rules for different countries etc.

there is one more factor to consider in this..... IF your s15 has had an assessment done on the emissions upon importing to this country, then the car will be taxed according to the emissions data. this figure, if known, will be on your registration document. i know this because after reading this thread, i recieved my tax reminder and was surprised to see that my tax for the year is £260, and not £215. i rang dvla and was told the above. £260 is the top rate for an s15, so nobody should be paying more than this in the UK.

below is a table i have taken directly from the dvla website. (emissions for my car is 243 g/km)

Thats some helpful info chaps. I wont be importing myself so hopefully they will be clued up enough to get it through on the better rates.

If the above is correct then i'll be happy.

imported mine in 2010 through a firm, car reg data was set at 2002 for V5 and number plate and the car was classed under the old PLG system since the CO2 was missed (deleted maybe) from the paperwork. so hopefully £215 this year when i renew again.

Hi All
You're missing the correct data

This is what you will pay if the car is pre march 2001 even if you register it today for the first time in UK.

[h=3]Cars registered before 1 March 2001 (based on engine size)[/h]Private/light goods (TC11)
Engine size (cc)
12 months rate
6 months rate
Not over 1549
£130.00
£71.50
Over 1549
£215.00
£118.25

I just registered mine on the 22nd of last month and bought 6 months @118.25
