The Advans are back on the car for daily use again.

The wheels for the show I borrowed from a friend, they were some old skool Manaray VR5 in 18x8.5 and 18x9.5

When the time comes and the wallet permits, I will be getting either a set of Volk GT-C in Gold or a set of GT-N

The kit is a M Sports front bar with vertex skirts and rear bar. All copies mind you :(

Nope, I have them in storage at the RTA.

So if anyone wants to give me a ridiculous amount of money, I might think about letting them go :D

RyanNK
21-01-2006, 13:49
My kind of rediculous amount of money is $100 at the moment :(

But with the RTA being the big ripoffs at the moment the anual fee for those is still over $400 which is friggin stupid.

S15R
21-01-2006, 14:14
in NZ you pay 400 bucks then the plate is yours forever! yes i agree, RTA rips people off :D

when i bought my S15 here in sydney, i was shocked that i had to pay so many **** to own the car whereas in NZ, 30 bucks will do :D

have you taken the rubber guard lining out of the front?

dcoghlan
05-03-2006, 04:12
yeah I took the inner guard linings out as they were being torn away from when I take the car onto the track and they didn't line up properly to the M-Sports front bar. I am thinking about making some up out of aluminium or something so they mate up perfectly to the M-Sports front bar.

A'PEXi
05-03-2006, 11:48
i'm thinking of taking mine out too, but i dont like the idea of revealing the washer bottle haha :P

Topper
06-03-2006, 08:48
I have no arch lining at the front, washer bottle is open, i have mesh to fill the holes just havent done it yet.

Main thing that worries me about them being removed is all the salt etc they put on the roads here getting in behind my arch and slowely rusting :eek: , i'm told as long as i wash it thourghly after i use it i'll be ok :nod:

Oh no, my two pet hates: big wings and stripes.... :(
I used to think the same, but now everyone is aus seems to have the same looking S15, which is really quite annoying. So i went for something which is a bit different. Its not just a show/poser car either, i actually drive it at the track, hill climbs and motorkhanas and now it really stands out in a crowd of S15's :D

PMSL! :notworthy:

No, that's not really a critisism. As Vandal says, its personal taste. I can see your reasoning. I've been the first to do certain styling mods in the past, and its quite annoying when everyone else copies and makes it look as though YOU have! :rolleyes: I'll let you get away with the wing, seeing how its used properly :thumbs:

Uras wings are supposedly carbon.

I'd definitely keep the Advans. I'm not usually a fan of 3 spoke wheels, but I think the silver Advans look :cool: on a pewter s15

yeah supposedly, but they aren't full carbon, i know that for a fact. The price alone tells me that. The closet thing they would be would be fibreglass covered in carbon fibre, but it doesn't even look like real carbon!

I bought a INGS Full carbon fibre wing for my girlfriends DC5 Type R and that cost me over $1500 AUS whereas the URAS GT wing for my S15 was only $600 AUS including delivery. If you work out the price to buy them in Japan, they work out at roughly $300 AUS!!!!!!

raytsang

I got the standard/mid height one. The low one I thought would look too funny, and the high one would need air traffic control clearance!!! There are also 2 mounting hole sets on the wing so you can have the posts wide like my one, or closer together in the center.

Yeah, can you post some pics for the spoiler please and may be a few shot from the bacl to see how it looks on the car. It looks good from the side not too high or too low.

I told the place which was fixing/rebuilding my gearbox to fix it. They have done the fix to many other S15 6 speeds before, so thats all that I needed to tell them.

They aren't hard to fit, its all about the height of the car and what size rubber you put on them. I had the rear guards rolled/lipped, but I don't think i needed to. You must also remember that my car isn't excessivley low. Even with the 19's on it, the rims don't sit up under the guards. Not really after that sik bro look.

In fact, if i took off my body kit, my car will pass the 100mm height inspection in NSW ;)

Any ideas of you camber settings? 8.5j ET27 i thought would stick out with anything less than about 2 degree's

dcoghlan
27-04-2007, 10:21
not exactly sure what camber settings I am running up front at the moment. basically I run around with a full time track alignment which means that on my Tein Flex camber tops, they are pushed all the way to the insides.

ichi-go
27-04-2007, 10:24
Now that you mention it, the +27 offset clears the brembos? The +30 TE37 looks fairly close already

dcoghlan
28-04-2007, 13:40
The 7.5 +30 clears both R33, R34 Brembos with about 8mm clearance and they clear Z33 Brembo's with about 2-3mm clearance.

The 8.5 +27 GT-C's clear the Brembo's without any issues, as they actually came off a Z33 350Z. The owner actually had the stock Brembo's removed and replaced with the Stop Tech brake upgrade

ichi-go
28-04-2007, 13:46
Urs is Z33 brembo

+30 = 2-3mm clearance

+27 = hit brembo???

Hmm Does it have to do with the Disk of the GTCs? Disk A B and O? I heard diff disk has clearance for big calipers.

dcoghlan
29-04-2007, 03:37
I think you have your offsets around the wrong way. +27 is 3 mm further out from the caliper than +30.

suppose I better update this...

Just installed my Cusco 5 point bolt in cage.
Also got a pair of Buddy Club Racing Spec Seats, but have only installed the drivers seat so far, I might have sold the other one, will know by the end of the week

just finished installing my new 16 row trust oil cooler with relocator and built in thermostat. My oil temps have now dropped by 20 deg C

Also got a Project Mu resovoir cover for my power steering fluid.

And got some R34 GT-R rear brembo calipers and rotors waiting to go on aswell. So now I will have matching gold brembo's front and rear.

Car goes in on Friday to get the tune touched up with the Tomei Exhaust manifold on it, and then off to get a wheel alignment in preparation for a track day on the 21st July :D

So what are you going to do for a E-brake.

I currently have 34 calipers / rotors but no E-brake.

What's your plan?

Just need to need to swap hubs and cables to run rear e-brake.....i think..lol

Yeah your pretty much right there. You don't NEED to change the hubs.

You can get away with just using the R33 GTS-T rear brake shoe setup and handbrake assembly. And to do it properly, you need to get the r33 GTS-T handbrake cable, and get the S15 end put onto it, otherwise the R33 cable is too long.

All R33 handbrake cables fit (they're all the same). I found the length to be fine (with my Z32 setup). The only issue is that they can't be bolted down using the cable's brackets :) The Z32 rear brake fitting guide is in my tech guides.

Got the car tuned a couple of weeks ago and my suspicions were right, the car doesn't have any VCT at all anymore and with the HKS step 2 cams, its quite doughy down low.

Well took the car out to the NSCC trackday at Wakefield on Saturday, and after the first session, I was getting the classic 5th gear lockout, so no more 5th gear for me for the rest of the day.

I still ran a new PB around the circuit, 1:08.76 so I am aiming for a 1:07 next time if I can get 5th gear sorted, and learn to keep the foot planted when coming down the slippery dip like I used to.

Tonight I go to pickup my R33 handbrake/e-brake setup tonight... only costing me AU$100 :D

Yeah the cage fitted perfectly. No pics yet, but will get some pretty soon andpost them up here. The car is going in for a studio photo shoot this sunday.

Also, why the Project Mu resovoir cover for power steering fluid?
When at the track, the power steering fluid boils and spills everywhere in the engine bay, its pretty common on S15's when they hit wakefield.

At the moment I have -2.6, but that isn't to fit the wheels, its more for my track alignment. Before i got the track alignment, the rear had -1.4 and I din't have any scrubbing issues, but that has more to do with the fact that my car isn't overly low.

Well its about time for another update.

We haven't received our pics yet from our studio shoot which we are a bit upset about, but they guy has been sending through little teasers. Hopefully we will get them before xmas :(

Well when my car went to the tuners last time, they confirmed that the VCT was completley dead, and that was the reason it sounded like a diesel truck.

So after thrashing it once at the racetrack and getting a PB with no VCT and no 5th gear (thats another story) I took the plunge and took the car in to get the VCT pulled out and replaced with some Adjustable cam gears.

So on the last tune with no VCT, worn HKS Step 2 cams and wandering intake cam timing, the old beast pulled 196rwkw.

This time around, the VCT inlet and standard exhaust cam gears were removed and replaced with JUN units.

The HKS Step 2 cams were also removed, as they were quite worn when I bought them second hand, and replaced with some Trust 264/264 jobbies with 11.5mm lift

So once it was all installed and the cam gears set to zero, the car pulled 202rwkw without any PFC tuning.

After about 4 hours on the dyno, the S15 had gained about 25rwkw throughout the whole rev range over the previous tune with the old gear in the car. So in the end, it ended up pulling 219rwkw (293rwhp) which is pretty good with a standard turbo. Response is also awesome for such big cams too! By 3000rpm it has built 0.9bar!!!!!

So needless to say I am extremely happy now, the car sounds awesome and has a nice slightly lumpy idle to.

yep, the only stuff in the head which is non standard is the cams, springs, rocker stoppers and adjustable cam gears

OK :)

How is the low end grunt from the car now when the VCT is removed?
Or does the new cams fill the gap?

dcoghlan
25-09-2007, 07:04
the low end is pretty good. Alot better than when I had the VCT and it wasn't working.

Alot of the low down response has to do with the time the tuners spent adjusting the cam gears. All up it was 4 to five hours.

He said adjusting the intake cam made the biggest difference, and they did adjust the exhaust cam aswell which gave a little improvement.

stock head gasket. When it comes onto boost, it hits 18psi and then in the top end its running about 14psi, basically the turbo runs out off puff

Nicely

well time for an update, nothing big though

damn Odessy battery died again, it was the second one I have been through, so I have now moved my battery to the boot and got an Optima yellow top one for starting duties. Also got a kill switch installed at the same time... it was the spare one from the AutoSalon S15.

Also got a Nismo thermostat installed. I can't recommend this mod enough. my water and oil temps were both sitting at 72deg this morning on the way to work, and on a hot day after a bit of a thrashing on the street water temps didn't go over 78deg.

Whilst it was in the workshop they found that the back caliper piston seal is slightly leaking, so I fitted my R33 handbrake setup aswell as the R34 GT-R rear Brembo and discs on the weekend. Car looks so much better now with gold Brembos on the front AND back.

My to do list now looks like this
* Replace front DBA5000 outer rings on the disc and get some pads for daily driving as Ferodo DS3000's have chewed away all my rotors... my slotted rotors are no longer slotted.
* Fit a 3.9 diff ratio from a Auto S15
* Fit my two BuddyClub bucket seats (already have these in the storeroom aswell, gotta loose weight so I can fit into them)
* Install a harness bar
* Buy some harnesses
* Buy a chargespeed bonnet

Time for another update

I was sick of my GT-C getting so damn dirty, so I have replaced my pads for street duties with Bendix General CT's. Now it takes weeks for the wheels to get dirty rather than hours.

I just got rid of my old Bride Brix seat, and upgrade to a Bride Zeta III + Bride FG rail. I love the seat, it awesome. Can't wait to get a second one so I can have a matching pair.

Next on the list of things to replace are the Whiteline rear offset camber bushes. When I got them close to 6 years ago, they did their job perfectly, but now I find that they don't seem the lock in place anymore, so my rear left wheel changes camber all by itself. I have just ordered a pair of Ikeya Forumla rear camber arms, and so I will hopefully be installing them in 1 or 2 weekends.

Vandal
02-09-2008, 07:38
Know exactly how you feel. I hate brake dust!

If you are after a decent pad without much dust, I'd give QFM a try. I have the HPX pads (I think they're called K500 now). They are good for up to 550 degrees and don't seem to dust more than stock pads.

dcoghlan
02-09-2008, 07:54
Thanks for the suggestion. But as it stands I still have 2 set of track pads (Ferodo DS3000 and SBS Pro Race dual carbon) that I swap into the front calipers when I prep the car for track days, so now I am not too concerned about how dirty my track wheels get as the TE37's are easy to clean...

dcoghlan
08-10-2008, 03:24
Another update....

Came across a HKS GT-RS turbo which was too good to pass up, and it was still in the box and had never been unwrapped, absolute bargain. Its sitting at home untill I can be bothered to get it installed.

Since the news of Trust/Greddy going bust came out, I decided to buy another radiator, so I now have a Greddy radiator sitting in the box at home to replace my Koyo 32mm copper core one. Theres nothing wrong with my Koyo one... but the Greddy one is nice and shiney :D

Have also managed to pickup a Apexi Super Suction Kit secondhand from an S15 which was written off. This will go on at the same time that my turbo gets replaced (whenever that is) and will replace the current custom made metal intake pipe made up by CRD.

Yesterday I removed my Whiteline rear camber bushes and replaced them with SuperPro non-adjustable bushes. At the same time I also replaced my rear camber arms with my Ikeya Formula ones which I had sitting at home for ages. I then setup the camber to be the same as it was prior to removing the Whiteline bushes and all seems to be going well.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have a small hole in my intercooler piping as when I up the boost over about 12psi, i don't seem to get much more power, just alot more whistling. So after the turbo gets replaced, I'll take the car to Plazmaman who will make me up some custom piping to suit my Hyperflow core. I may even get the compressor housing rotated on the turbo and re-route some of the cooler piping to make it shorter.

Then it will be time for a re-tune and maybe a new gearbox :(

kazamas15
08-10-2008, 09:35
hopefully it will give it a tiny bit of extra pickup....

Yes the auto diff will give you that extra pickup, but you really have to step on the accelerator to make the car go. If you don't run a boost controller, there will be little more lag on boost, but then again this depends on how hard you step on the accelerator.

Its been a while since my last update....

* Installed my GT-RS turbo fitted a few months ago, I like the extra torque all the way to redline now :D Also replaced the lines with Earls braided items

* Removed custom CRD metal intake pipe and installed Apexi Super Suction kit

* Removed Koyo 32mm copper core radiator and installed Greddy radiator

* installed heat shielding around ABS unit

* Installed ProConcept 2 piece Z33 rotors as my DBA5000's were completly worn. It was cheaper to buy a new set of rotors than it was to buy a new set of outer rings for the DBA's

* Installed a newer crown wheel and pinion (STD ratios) as my old one was quite worn.

* Installed 3" Willans 6 point harness.

The car then had its first outing on the circuit with the new turbo on Australia Day. The gearbox didn't like the extra torque and 5 laps into in my first timed session it stripped the teeth from 4th gear.

The car has been parked in my garage since 26th Jan, and since then my drivers side window has decided it doesn't want to work anymore.

I will be pulling the 6MT out of the car and replacing it with a S14 5MT. I managed to find a S14 5MT, rebuilt with a PPG 1st - 4th Helical cut dog engagement gearset, PPG mainshaft and PPG selector forks. So I have paid the deposit on that so they keep it for me.

I wont get the box for at least a month or so due to the fact I am getting married in 3 weeks so just cant quite afford to pay the balance until after the wedding.

I posted this on the NSCC forums so certain references to peoples cars may not be relevant here.

With the help of The Engine Whisperer (http://enginewhisperer.com/wp/) (DumHed) we finally got the S14 5spd installed into MY S15.

First things first though.
Now according to most things you read on the 'interweb' to do an S14 5 speed conversion in an S15, all you need is the box, clutch and tailshaft.

But in reality, that list is no-where near correct.

So far I have found you need the following when doing the conversion

* S14 manual gearbox. - I've used a box built with a PPG 1st to 4th Helical Dog (http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/page.asp?parentid=3&parent2id=15&parent3id=38&productid=62) which comes with the billet selector forks and it also has the billet mainshaft (http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/page.asp?parentid=3&parent2id=15&parent3id=38&productid=58)
* S14 Clutch and flywheel - I opted for the ORC Twin Plate - ORC-559D-02N (http://www.nengun.com/orc/559-series-twin-plate-clutch-550ps)
* 8 x S14 flywheel bolts - nissan sell these for $22 each
* All 11 S14 bellhousing bolts - If you don't have these you will need to buy them as you can only re-use the top 2 bellhousing bolts from the S15. I sourced my bolts from a combination of Shane's car and Nepean BoltMaster (www.nepbolt.com.au)
* 2 x S14 starter motor bolts
* S14 gearbox crossmember - Again stolen from Shane's car
* 1 x spigot bush
* 1 x C's Short Shifter - Thanks CaBS
* 1 x S14 tailshaft - I used Shanes old one, but as far as I can tell you need the front half of the S14 one.
* 1 x S14 Exhaust hanger/mount - If you don't have one of these you can modify the S15 to fit just by drilling 2 new holes in the mount which will then line the mount up perfectly which is what we ended up doing.
* 1 x S14 gear knob

Now for the important stuff

I took the car for a drive today and whilst it is a helical cut gearset, the box does have a whine. Its not obnoxious like in a straight cut box, so its quite easy to live with. Infact I think it makes the car sound quite tough, without being stupidly loud.

Clunks - oh my got, if you think your car has clunks, come for a ride in my car now, changes from 1st to 2nd are now the worst and I can see why people don't recommend driving a dog box everyday in traffic. Its a lots of work.

On the Advice of Andrew I was double clutching when downshifting and that seems to work ok. A little blip of the throttle to roughly rev match and its not too bad (but still clunks)

I have also found that the ratios are fairly longer than a std S14 box

STD Ratios: 3.321/1.902/1.308/ 1.00 / 0.838
PPG Ratios: 2.62 / 1.73 / 1.28 / 1.00 / std

Now I haven't done too much testing with this as I have only really driven the car once, but I did see that I did hit 60 in first gear but I am not sure if it had anymore in it as I was too busy watching the other traffic and worrying about trying to change gears. I think maybe a shorter final drive will be next on the agenda.

But enough of the bad stuff. When you are giving the car a bit of stick, and you slam it into gears whilst using the clutch its a good feeling, now clutchless shifting is just another world, it feels awesome, I never thought changing gears in an Silvia would feel or sound like it does when doing the clutchless shifting, i guess the sound has a bit to do with the slight whine the box has now too.

Overall I am fairly happy with the conversion. I guess I am just happy I can drive the car again after it being off the road since January.

The next thing on my agenda to look at is the fact that my drivers side window now does not work at all, which limits where I can drive the car to and also means that if its raining I cannot drive the car as the window does not wind up. I ran a multimeter over the wiring and can see the regulator getting the correct power from the switches, so lets hope I can just replace the regulator and it will be fixed.

For just puttering around town, only let the car rev to 3k, then slowly change gears, which gives time for the gears/shafts to decelearte and then the next gear just slots straight in without any clunks. Rev it any higher than 3k and it clunks regardless.

I have gotten better at double clutching whilst downshifting and am getting more comfortable with driving it around town.

I have given it the odd blast when getting on motorways etc, and not using the clutch under full throttle still blows my mind. I am gonna try and mount my video camera soon so you can see what its like. I can't wait to drive it on a track.

Its a very scary noise when you hear someone not using the clutch to engage gears as i found out last track day i went out with Dale when he demonstrated to me his clutchless shifting sounds like you break something everytime he was shifting lol

I can't wait to hear it. Going for a drive in it would be even cooler.

well a bit of an update, I went to the OZ Mazda track day at Wakefield park on the 15th August for my first trackday since having the new gearbox.

Having a dogbox on the street is a real pain in the arse with its stupidly long first gear and clucnky gear changes, but take it to the track and the box comes into its element. Clutchless shifting is something to be experienced and the box felt so strong. I have every bit of confidence in the box and I am pretty confident it won't break to easily.

Still haven't had a chance to get a video camera in the car yet, just been a bit busy with the wifes car at the moment.

Here are some more recent shots of the car. Chris is an awesome photographer and all round nice guy. For those of you who are in Sydney, I would highly recommend him to shoot your cars. He had a pretty good assistant too.

anyways here are the pics.

In the end I ended up getting some Manfotto stuff. I got the following so I could mount it to the cage in the car.
035 Manfrotto Superclamp
155RC Tilt Top Head with quick release
