View Full Version : Paul2x Spec-R Project
Per your requests here is some detailed Pic's of spec's on my latest project.
J-spec , spec -r (02') I picked up about 4 months ago now.
super clean low miles. Building for fun track/street car.
Was bone stock when I picked her up.
Started w/ the basics first,
Dampers, Wheels, Brakes, and all other bolt on's for a few more hp.
Also pulled any unnessary stuff to save a few lbs. without hurting the driveablity.

:thumbs:very nice.. see you have a tomei mani. ive one coming in the post.. hehe.
how do you find the mani?
also like the matt black fmic pipes:thumbs:
but does black not soak up more heat????
does the tomei mani have a brace on it?I really fancy one of them!
does the tomei mani have a brace on it?I really fancy one of them!
It does.
It's a really nice piece.
Did u go for the tomei elbow as well?Liking the dog box is it H pattern or sequential?
What Turbo have you. The inlet pipe looks big. Matt black looks well on various parts where you get it done? Engine bay is spotless. Credit to you..
Full spec's added to first post.
Thanks for all the comments guys.
Will answer Q's tonight when i get back home
thanks again

Stunning car - clean, tidy with loads of goodies...
Looks like the before and after pics were taken with different cameras lol - before (normal) and after (digital SLR).
Nice to see you're running the original airbox setup - this is probably more rare than having an induction kit!!

u know what...............
Its nice heheh is it legal to drive it over there??
that is a very nice n definitley a very clean looking s15. Good stuff
Stunning looking car mate, nice spec list too
How did you manage to get it road legal over in the states?
This is a JDM? There's a lot of english language notices in the engine bay... And where's your rocker cover breather pipe...?
Did u go for the tomei elbow as well?Liking the dog box is it H pattern or sequential?
Yes also have the elbow and for the gear box, by far the best mod to the car, H-pattern
Looks like the before and after pics were taken with different cameras lol - before (normal) and after (digital SLR).
LOL as a matter of fact it is!, Good eye! :D

Wow u guys are sharp :D
Yes it is a JDM car, and all the Japanese info is in english just as one of the steps to convert the car.
A friend of mine that deals only with GTR's did me the favor and a few others the very rare favor.
And yes the engine pic was just shot after I installed my new intake pipe and forgot to install the breather hose back in..:D
Hope that answers all the Q's.
Thanks for the kind words and i'll keep ya posted w/ the progress.

that mani's gonna be distroyed with out that breather hose....
ive heard that taking the coilpack cover off can reduce the temperature of the coilpacks to give a better spark is that true???

Yeah like I said it just came off b/c i was swapin intake pipes , OE hose is back on.
And yes, thats why i pulled the cover. Same issue with the GTR's but on a smaller scale but i figured it would only help.
Some aftermarket plates like ARC, and Tomei's are vented for that purpose.

Is it the other way round? By removing the coilpack cover, more heat from the bay will reflect back by the hood?

Don't think so, and if you have a vented bonnet it's quite obvious.
That's a stunning car with lots of goodies, are you planning on adding a bigger aftermarket turbo?
That's a stunning car with lots of goodies, are you planning on adding a bigger aftermarket turbo?
I actually built my set-up around using a Gt 2871r but had nothing but problems with that turbo.
So in a last minute attempt to get the car ready to a Time Attack event we thew the stock turbo back just to get the car up and running.
Power is good approx high 290's with matching Tq for track set-up and Street map we did 314whp w/ 326ftlbs at the wheels
and last corner ballence we did car weighed in at 2481 Lbs with a half tank of gas.
Now just trying to source a set of front fenters and new wheels to put bigger rubber on her for the track..
Also need R34 master cylinder and most likely some sort of portioning valve.
well see,
the project continues.. =)

The stock turbo on that age of S15 will be a non-BB T28.

I believe all S15s manufactured after October 2000 had the Garrett T28 ceramic turbos as found on the S14's. Pre October 2000 have the Garrett T28 Ball Bearing turbo as standard. Some cost cutting initiative by Nissan no doubt
YOu sure about that,
B/c their is lots of talk about this on the U.S forums b/c the S15 T28 is a very popular upgrade. The B.B Spec-r unit is most reconizible from the divider next to the waste gate port , which non-spec-r and eairly models do not have. Mine does have this piece. In fact it's identical to this turbo sold here. Which is also a OE Nissan B.B unit.
http://phase2motorsports.stores.yahoo.net/niss15siljsp.html
So B.B indeed

Humm i would not go by the divider at all. as my2002 s15 has the divider that your talking about and im 100% sure its not BB even checked the serial numbers.
i have my GT-RS coming so its sorted now.
oh yeah another difference ive heard is the oil outlet on non and bb s15 turbo are different.
bb have a longer oil outlet pipe connecting to it
non have a shorter pipe.
I had to order the longer one and new gasket to fit the GT-RS.
I am 100% positive.
The truth about S15 turbos (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=163146)
and
Have I got a T28BB or T28 turbo? (http://forum.s15oc.com/showpost.php?p=23091&postcount=7)
No S13, S14 or S15 has ever been fitted with a ceramic turbo.
very interesting...lol
You got me thinking about pulling my turbo now just to check the #'s .
Is the cut off date based on the manfucture date or titled date?
B/c after looking into it my i guess my car is a Late 00' or Earily 01' which ever way you look at it.
So if i just check to see if my turbo has this number (CHRA No. 446179-####) that will tell me?
Where is this # located on the turbo?
thanks for the great info.....gotta share with all the U.S boys.. =)
The PN tag is here:
http://s15.jull.net/bb_turbo_tag.jpg
If its a BB, it'll have 14411-91F00 (as in the photo).
nice S15, looks like it will be a track weapon :rotfl:
I have some questions on your Ohlins coilovers.
How would you rate them compared to other coilovers?
Are they the standard off the shelf damper and spring rates 8kg front and 6kg rear?
how do they feel on the street and track?
I'm only asking because I'm looking at getting a set from Japan
hi, whats the xs power pack thingy?
bloody nice :D great choice of mods and perfect pics to go with it :P

Hello and thanks for the kind comments everyone.
I love the Ohlins dampers, on various cars i've ran almost every brand out their but the ohlins are the only one's i've had on the S15 so far, but i won't swap them for anyhting.
I set out for a damper that could be tollerated on the street yet be very nice on the road course, and these are prefect.
I went to Hayashi San, @ Garage Saurus and he told me the 8k and 6k would be a prefect mix for the street / track b/c the tracks here in the States are such crap and slippery you need a softer spring rate to hook up. He also gave me a set of 10k sprins so i can go with a 10/8k set-up as well.
But so far the 8/6k combo is working great, just have to stiffin up the front almost all the way when i go to the track and run a bit more ride hight to save the fenders.
I highly recommend them.
hi, whats the xs power pack thingy?
It's a ignition amp, from a local shop here XS Engineering. Really nice piece simular to the B&M unit but stronger. On my Evo this pak alone made 6 more hp to the wheels! Nothing else.
Cheap Hp imo. :D
Thanks agian for the comments , Here's a pic wit my new front Bar.

Very nice. Really like that you've painted the IC pipes. I've been thinking about doing the same as mine are all scratchy and stuff.
Will you try to get the aero sideskirts too or something else?
What does the XS engineering pak do? How can i get one? :D

Yeah, I had the IC pipes and valve all powder coated wrinkel black.
I have new set of front fenders and a hood waiting to go on, for track purposes, but probally wont do the side skirts, just b/c i don't want the extra weight.
In the future i'll just do it all at once and do a Vertex lang kit and be done with it , but still a bit more chassie tuning to do first. :D

Stiffen your chassis and get corner weight balancing done, this is where the S15 excels in handling......point the steering wheel and throt it, it just goes without a fight....very neutral indeed.
It reduces alot of dynamic uncertainties when the boost comes on when you're getting out of a corner fast.
TOP GEAR should not be prasing M3's handling before they even set hands on a silvia.
I'm very tempted to get a set of Olins if not for the HKS support I can get to reoil and revalve my tied HKS coilovers locally when time comes.

Indeed it is. First thing I did with the car was suspension and brake tuning and have tried various set-up's with different corner balence while tuning at the track.
Corner balence imo is really useless for a car that isn't running a full race-cert. cage , b/c their is so much chassie/body flex that it defeats the whole idea of why one sould corner balence their car.....but i still do it anyway.. =)
current weight so far w/ a half tank of gas is 2481 lbs.
With a good suspension set-up and some good rubber it's hard to beat the feel of a properly set up - 15' on the track..
Very easy to drive fast. I love it! :smitten:

I agree.
I would love to place a rollcage but 2 reasons detered me from doing so:
1. I could get into trouble with the law as road legal cars are forbiden to install rollcage in my country.
2. I'm 6'1", with my Recaros I'm 1" off from roof and I have to slide my driver's seat all the way back (as a matter of fact I custom drilled an additional hole 1" further back) for a ideal driving position. If i install a rollcage at the ideal B-pillar location for left to right top reinforcement, it will be in the way of my head against my seat.
Therefore I had to settle for reinforcement bar from left to right across rear passenger legroom and foam fill my entire door sills and B-pillars for reinforcement of front to back frame reinforcement.
Our S15 is already the one with the best ridigity comparing to S13 ans S14.
At half tank gas, I get 1280kg (exclude driver) on the scale and f/b weight distribution is 53.5/46.5 ratio (w. driver).
Awesome car. Clean and no fuss but looks the good. I like the detail in the engine bay. What's the finish on the engine cover and cooler pipes? It's not just matt black with with a grain to it.

Paul2x,
Great to see that U have discarted yr rear seats.
I folded my rear seat down and used a pair of red larguage stripe to hold the rear seat back piece down for good, I choose red stripe as I have installed a pair of red Recaros for the front.
I would have love to discart the rear seats if not for fear that our local authorities might give me problems for not installing them if and when I do get pull over on the road.
Just remove them and paint the area to make it look likes seats are fitted :D

Would also like to know this, and rough camber settings :)
Like the wheels, they look good.
Like the new wheels. Enkei or Volk?

Thanks for the comments Guys,
Not the Volks , they are Enkei RPF1's
Front: 17x9
Rear : 17x9.5
right now in street trim (street tires) , b/c I have my R-comp' tires on another set of wheels and the R-comps won't clear until my new front fenders come in.
Had to rock the aggressive offset up front to get the "concave" face up front, but it's only way to run them IMO. =)
Running 255/35/17 Nitto NT01's Front and Rear, mabye 265 in the Rear if I can.
I wanted the same set-up "MCR" uses on their shop S15.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Paul2x/0018.gif
I contacted them , then made a few changes to their set-up and their you have it. =).
oh yea the Enkei's really rock man they look the part alright!!
Thanks guys,
Like mentioned, these will be my track wheels mainly b/c their really light for the price.
I threw them on the scales too before i mounted them.
Front : 16.2 lbs
Rear : 16.5 lbs
Thanks again for the kind words.
Stay Tuned, More to Come :)

Do you know the sizes and offsets of the MCR wheels?
They sit perfect IMO - Although are running a fair bit of camber i imagine.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a109/Paul2x/0018.gif
Yes i do.
They run 17x9.5 +38 front and rear
with a 20mm front spacer and 25mm over fender up front
with 255's on all 4 corners.
This is the exact set-up I did but, I'm not a big fan of running such a large spacer. Also MCR uses Tein racing damper w/ remote resovior so the damper body itself is narrower than a conventional style damper thus giving them more inner clearance.
I tried the 9.5 +38 up front with an even larger 25mm spacer (20mm won't work w/ regular damper) with my Ohlins dampers and had only 1-2mm of clearance from the wheel to the damper...which i didn't like
Thats why I did the 9 up front b/c a 17x9 +22 still gives you the Nice looking "Concave" face up front and with a 15mm spacer comes out only 1mm less than the 9.5 and gives me much more clearance on the inside by the damper. A better fit IMO. and a lighter wheel
And with my 20mm fenders it fits perfectly flush just like the MCR car and u can still run 255's on all 4 tires
Only down side, is MCR's set-up u can rotate wheels front to back if needed....but i got 2 sets so i'm good
Hope that helps ya out...
I'll post some new pic's as soon as i get my fenders and new rubber on
-Paul :D

Paul,
Beautiful car. Very nicely done. You are right, these do make a wonderful track car, but I have to ask, seeing as how you are in California, how did you pull it off to make a street car of it. I debated doing this, but did not see a way, unless I called it a 98 200SX to get in registered on the road here. Too late for me to do it now with what has been done to my car but I was just curious. If there is a way, I am going to be looking for another one to drive on the street and selling the Land Cruiser.
What do you think of the Ohlins coilovers. I am about 90% towards doing a full JIC setup next week. The Tein Flex I have installed now along with the stock suspension components are giving me too much roll.
Neo' ,
Thanks for the complement as far as the dampers go, I love the Ohlins, Mine were actually set-up by Garage Saurus Japan w/ their own spring rates and valving.
JIC's are nice too, while they last. My last set of JIC's lasted 6 months before the seals blew on 3 of the 4 dampers on one of my other cars, and I know others who have had this same problem so until they work that out i'd stay away. But for the 6 months that they did last they were GREAT. Also depends on what your doing w/ the car and how u drive.
I have my Ohlins set-up quite soft in terms of high performace dampers but for what i do w/ the car it's perfect, so mainly comes down to what's your budget, what your plans are for the car , and what kind of ride u like.
All good brands, but i'm a strong belever that u get what u pay for.
In terms of a another 15' for your street car, that's really up to u. Their are a handfull of people now that i've heard are bringing cars in but might be more of a headach than it's worth w/ CA emissions and what not, your call really.
Good luck
Looks really hot, damnit I need to find someone down here in Melbourne to do it for me.
I'm sure u can, Most powder coating places have "Wrinkel black" and "Texture black" Mine is more like "Texture black"
I even had some places tell me they wouldn't do the "Texture" only the "wrinkel" b/c it's a harder process.
look around i'm sure you'll find someone.
Topper! u going to join the Enkei club..LOL
sure sound's like it
How durable is the powder coating considering the heat produced? I don't want to do it if it will be something that will look crap after a couple months.

Much more durable to heat than paint....I don't know of anyone who's had problems with PC stuff
Topper! u going to join the Enkei club..LOL
sure sound's like it
If only i had the cash, just moved house so need to get used to paying for that 1st before i see what spare monies i have.
Just researching wheel sizes etc so when the time comes i know what i need to get.
Do you think there is much benifit in running a 9j as apposed to an 8j up front? Obviously the tire would be wider and help traction, but for my car being mostly road with the odd (but hopefully increasing number of) trackdays, would it warent fitting wider fender and wider wheels? Obviously it would look better, as both front and rear wheels could be concaved depending on the design, but i cant think i could justify the additional cost just for the look alone.
Also, since your a keen track man, what about this - http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=DEI080131
Come to daddy.....
http://www.enkei.co.jp/en/products/wheels/gtc01/outline/images/wheel.jpg
Thats a nice wheel!
but if you look at it the price difference between a 8 and a 9 is very small, same goes for the tires.
It really all depends on the look you like. My BBS LM's that are run are 8's up front but i have to run a 15mm spacer to clear the dampers so. IMO it would be better to just get a 9 w/ no spacer or smaller spacer basied on what the offset is.
But like i said for a road car both would be fine, it just comes down to looks.
cant' really get anything aggressive in a 8' , but 9's give u a few more options.
Find the look u like then get the size u need to achieve that look.
I was going to go 9.5 up front, but didn't need it. I could fit the same size tire, (255/40/17) with more clearance, a little lighter and a few dollars less... 9.0 was it.. =)
You may have the same case w/ the 8's if you find the right wheel.
good luck! :D
-Custom ACPT Dry Carbon Drive shaft
omg!!! how much lighter is it and what's your thoughts?
That sounds expensive to me......
As for the wheels, i agree you get a much more aggresive look with a 9 over an 8, but this then causes fitment issues, these can be sorted by having wider front fenders of course....... its only money
-ACPT Carbon Drive shaft
omg!!! how much lighter is it and what's your thoughts?
Ah it's about half, The two picece unit is about 23lbs and the Carbon shaft is 11lbs.
More importuant is it's much stronger and it flexes and absorbs viabration much more so it's easier on the driveline.
With my gearbox i kept breaking drive shaft bolts from the upshifts and it was very harsh, with the new shaft is much better, not a single problem and i'm sure you put a few more hp to the ground.
IMO it's one of the most overlooked mods you can do as the difference is quite large over stock.

Also not forgetting drivability since wider tyres floats on wet road, its not so safe no?

Paul, let me know if you get bored with that beautiful car. I would be happy to buy it since it's already here and I wouldn't have to deal with the import, registration hassle. I have to loves in the car world, the S15 Silvia, and the 3rd gen RX7. I have to find a way to get one for the street.
I ended up going with JIC for the suspension on mine. They offered a sponsorship and the savings was too much to pass up.
I like what I am hearing with the drive shaft you choose. Where is that company located?
Funny, I purchased a set of RPF1's yesterday, then logged on today to see you had chosen the same wheel. I ended up going with 18's but noticed you stayed with 17's. Any benefit to this? I originally debated running 17's ,but then saw JIC was running 18's on their time attack car so decided to go with 18's. 18x8.5 +30 front with Hankook Ventus Z214 245/35 in front and 18x9.5 +38 with 275/35 in the rear. I was going to go with a wider wheel/tire in front, but JIC was telling me about their initial experience going through the stock steering box with the wider wheels up front. They solved this problem by putting a GTR box up front.
I think trying to figure out the tire and wheel size was the most difficult thing I have done yet in this project. Talking with Enkei, looking at what others have done, and a little guess work. They will be coming in Thursday so I hope they fit.
You going to Buttonwillow this weekend?

I found another one already here in California (actually two) so if you get the chance, let me know what's involved in getting this one registered and on the road. Since you've been through it, I am sure you have some good direction on this. I am selling my 03 Land Cruiser now to finance the purchase of the second S15. The land Cruiser was sucking up gas at about 8 miles to the gallon with car laden trailer in tow. Cost me over $200 in gas alone to drive from Berkeley to Buttonwillow so my Mercedes Sprinter box truck is getting all towing duty now.
I sent ACPT a message as I am after a Carbon drive shaft for my track car, but they never replied back, been going on three weeks now.

Get profile pictures up of your car with the new wheels one, i'm interested to see how the 9.5j ET38 fit, what camber are you running at the rear?

Pictures of the 9.5 38 wheels are up at the end of the first page of my post for this car "Neosilvia's 99 S15".
Paul, your lucky you have one for the street. From what I can tell, the two I found were not legally imported, so I will not be going near those. Oh well, no S15 for the street for me. There has only been one other car to tempt me in recent years and it will hit the streets next year in the states. GTR here I come.
Hey guys it's been quite awhile since my last update. Just been really busy.
Some of the parts from japan are starting to finally trickel in.

Gp-sports.
SRB-power sell them or you could get them from japanparts or Ooparts.
probobly FRP so should be light :)

And I thought Americans just always drove around in their pickups and cadillacs. Nice!!
Paul: Did you get rid of the BBS split rims or that just for a show look? Thinking of a set myself but gonna go for plain silver I think with polished lip.

Ha ha, I actually just picked up a new Toyota pickup last week. I guess i fit the bill.
I got rid of the BBS LM's b/c they were too narrow for the look i was going for espically after i added the wider front fenders.
Still one of my fav' rim's of all time.
Had a set on my M3 as well =)

We did 316hp with 327tq at the wheels on my car.
turned it down a bit for the road course (heat) but on the street it was great

How did you manage to get to peak at so low RPM? Was it the boost controller at work?
Spent quite a bit of time researching the best set-up to maximise Tq and responce.
So my tuner, Aki Fuchigami from Garage Bomber and his good friend Haiyashi san from Garage Saurus put together the tuning map for my car.
Since i mostly use the car for circut/hotlaping. The above tune was a big aggressive for the track as it brought my oil/water temps quite quick (stock rad/no oil cooler at the time ) It was fine on the street but i wanted a bulletproof set-up at the track so we turned it down a bit.
Here's a dyno of the map i run at the track,:

No filters. Then i'll size them in Picasa or P-shop.

paul whats the story behind the yashio ignition harness? What gains can you expect from it if you get me?
paul whats the story behind the yashio ignition harness? What gains can you expect from it if you get me?
Well when you see it in person it's much beefier than the OE unit, and also has a relay that is attached directly to the battery to pull extra amps when needed. I was having some mis-fire issues when I started to run some real boost, and it turns out that 15's are notorious for this problem due to the coil packs. In my research I found that several of the "hard core" 15's out their usually end up running some other sort of ignition set-up, like switching to S14 ECU and coilpacks. Since Yashio Factory has several S15 customers they found it easier to come up with their own solution in this harness.
I didn't do a before and after dyno but, with my mis-fire issue it made a drastic improvement.
I'm headed back to the dyno so maybe i'll do a test on it, but it's evident it's an improvement over the stock unit.
Lookin good Paul!
What about some Splitfire coilpacks? Pretty sure they put out higher amps to give a stronger spark. Good for those high boost/high rpm motors.

Thanks very very much.
I've heard nothing but bad things about the Splitfire coilpaks. I know their notorious for causing problems with GTR's but not sure about SR.
New packs are defently in the line up but figured I see if I can correct the problem with some cheaper options first.
When I go that route, I'll go with the Okada Projects coil packs or new set of OEM units. :D
Thanks very very much.

Really? I know of a handful of SR guys runing them and no probs yet.
I hadnt heard any derogatory at all
Splitfires are pretty famous in oz as well but that's because it's cheaper to replace it with splitfires than stock coilpacks. Splitfires are known to cause problem if you are running lots of boost.
That's when msd and the likes starts to get into the equation
